About Auchenback Active

Our History

The organisation’s origins date back to 1998, when a group of local residents was formed through the Scottish Government’s Pathfinder Scheme to improve the living conditions of the Auchenback area of Barrhead across four main themes: Health, Safety, Environment and Education & Employment.

In 2010, Auchenback Active received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, ‘for enabling local people to influence service providers and decision making processes to improve local services.’

Today, the organisation manages the Auchenback Resource Centre (ARC) a community owned facility built in 2004 with the support of the European Regional Development Fund and The BIG Lottery (amongst others).  The ARC provides community access to a range of services, learning and leisure opportunities, as well as a social space for local people.

The ARC

Auchenback Resource Centre is a fully-accessible single storey building comprising of a kitchen and community café area, 10 desk ICT/training suite, public access area, staff office, 2 no. meeting rooms, toilets and a large multiuse hall (with movable partitions to create three separate spaces).

The centre is open to the community six days week (between 09:00am and 22:00 Monday to Thursday and 09:00 to 13:00 Friday and Saturdays)

Our Volunteers & Staff

Two paid members of staff (1 x FT / 1 x PT Hall Keepers) undertake the day to day running of the centre, supported by a team of seven volunteers.

Management of the centre is undertaken by a volunteer board of eight members, all of whom reside in the community of Auchenback.

Climate Challenge

This project aims to support the community of Auchenback to take action to reduce carbon emissions by reducing their energy consumption, establishing a new food growing site, creating a team of trained Food Growing / food Waste and Energy  Champions, and facilitating the development of a community learning network to share knowledge, information and practical skills which address food waste.

There are a number of opportunities to participate including being a food waste champion and community gardening.  If you'd like to learn more please contact Lesley at Voluntary Action East Ren on 0141 876 9555 or email lesley@va-er.org.uk
